Not much to go on huh.

Non-magnetic but metal, found in an area that dates back to before 1880's. I'm having trouble taking any good pictures. I'll keep trying but here's what I have so far. I'm hoping that someone will recognize the partial pattern. I'm thinking it's some sort of seal insert. But, I don't know what would be sealed with metal like this. I thought that there were letters around the edge but looking as close as I can, I think they're just designs. The back appears to be blank and the edge is a bit beveled.

Could have been for a top of a small jar or even some sort of token/prize?. Are you sure that is not writing (maybe foreign writing) on the artifact? Looks interesting, too bad it wasn't a whole piece, this just makes yah :icon_scratch: yah head for hours! :occasion14:

Take some baby powder (or flour) and cover it, then use a damp microfiber towel (wrapped around your finger) to make a level sweep across the raised areas. The powder/flour should make enough of a contrast for you to take a better photo. I downloaded the photo, zoomed it, and it does not look like letters or script at the top.

Since it is less than an inch in diameter and has a ridge on the back, I'm thinking it could be an insert piece to a rosette or jewelry. Is it thick or thin? :) Breezie

I tried the powder trick but it didn't help. So, I tried a different lighting and took a few through my loupe. The edge markings still look like a repeated character to me. Kind of looks like a y or an arrow. The bevel I thought I saw on the back I don't think is actually. I'm thinking it's just a ridge that's warped.

A button sounds like it could be right. I guess it was broken off just past the stem?

Anyway, here's a couple more pics. I'll check back in later today as I'm on my way to find the rest of it! ;)

Thanks!

Thanks for the closer pics. Yes, it is a repeated character, but not script/letters/words. Perhaps you could try to clean it more, then repeat the powder test. At any rate, it appears to be either a part of inset jewelry (pendant/earring/rosette) or either the face of a 2-pc. button.

We all can see different images, as I say, like "clouds," and I see a row of hearts at the top, and below are 3 cherubs surrounding a larger heart, which could be typical of any Victorian button or jewelry piece.

Now ya see, that's why I asked. I can't even tell if it's the top or the bottom. ;) LOL

Anyway, I'm satisfied with what you've said. I'll leave it unchecked for a while, but if nobody disagrees, I'll mark this one solved.

Thanks again Breezie!

I saw this in your original post with your other finds and I'm glad you posted it here too. I don't have a clue myself but I'm curious to see if anyone else does.

I dug something similar awhile back and come to find out it was a 19th century love token. If you google 19th century Victorian token you will see some examples and tokens could have been made from anything back then. So like Breezie said a rosette or jewelry or a token. Wonder if there were any horse race tracks close by. Maybe you can go back and find the other piece. :leprechaun-hat:
