Small chert celt??? or what is it???

Super polish on that bit. Maybe it got broke and they started knapping it down till it was exhausted. Interesting piece fort sure.
 

jpitt - looks to be the bit off of a polished flint celt. I assume from the type/material you're in the KY/TN area? I've never found a complete polished flint piece but have found a handful of partials such as the one you found. I think they're exceptoinally cool finds. Congrats.
 

Would have worked really well as a wedge. Are there wear or impact marks on the top end of it? Nice find, too.

As a matter of fact, the butt end does appear to have some impact damage.

Kinda sorta....found in North Al, not far from Tn
 

Hey Jpitt,

I found 2 celts like that. They both had very polished bits, but were very rough back to the butt end. Makes you wonder if maybe the maker was more concerned with the utilitarian aspect as opposed to the cosmetics of the tool?
