Hi all,

Found a small bronze jar looking object at a site that has produced a number of interesting relics this last weekend. I believe it to be bronze, though it could be brass. It's some sort of yellow copper alloy.

It is engraved with what I believe to be palm trees and animals but thats a guess. I'm afraid to clean it, given its condition.

I would really love to know what is.

Penny for size comparison.

Thanks

My guess would be some sort of decrative piece for any # of items. Looks like to me from the pic that a rod or something could come through it. Decrative finneal on the top of a stove.....fancy shiny brass knob on a horses hame.......

thanks for the ideas all,

I wish it was an opium jar Gypsy, but I'm thinking its probably more along your crib idea or another decorative applique.

Can you tell which way the decoration looks correct? I was thinking it might be the top of a cane possibly.

dodad - the decorations look right (assuming I'm seeing them right) with the "threaded" end down. But if they are animals and palms instead of plants (I now believe they are plants) then it would be correct the way it is in the first picture. More like a jar.

Thanks for the idea. I'm trying to imagine how it is part of a cane.
