Small Black Powder Keg ?? I don't know !!

I found this interesting small barrel at a thrift shop a few days ago.It has 1 S.C.C. on top of it .Its all hand made from wood and metal.What was it used for and how old might it be ? Someone suggested it may be a antique black powder keg.It only stands 11 inches tall.I got it because its so neat looking !

S.C.C= South Carolina Confederates ??? ???

Wow Reddie! That is just too freakin' cool, dont have to answer but..............how much did you pay fer that? Ive got a large barrel (40 gallons??) & a smaller one used for nails, I love them! Very rustic & cool!

Re: Small Black Powder Keg ?? I don't know !!

Several years ago I bought an 11" oak barrel with HERCULES POWDER COMPANY printed on the side (paid $30.00 for it at an antique show/sale), but mine has no bung hole. Apparently the original contents of mine had been accessed by removing the boards/slats from the bottom of the barrel. So I am guessing your barrel was used as a liquid container. Brandy? Rum? Hard to know, but those small barrels are really cool, aren't they?

Hi reddie, awsome score ,not quite sure but i my opinion i, donot think that  your barrel is for port, rum or any liquid .For 2 reasons having a single bung or seal hole in that position would make it very awkward to poor.Half of your rum would end up on the floor and there would be no regulated flow thought a second hole.Some barrels of rum i have seen have 2 holes in them for the reason i have explained above.The other hole usually on the bottom close to rim ,so a wooden or brass tap can be inserted to control the flow even more.Very nice anyway. Congrats.

Ahhhh,......Uhhhh,......... that would be called a bung hole! Now you know where the term comes from. The thing used to tap the barrel is called a bung. A small keg that size was commonly called a lug. Bootleggers use to haul whiskey in similar barrels. Monty

nope, the bung is the actual plug that goes into the so called "bung hole"... tapping a barrel is achieved with a barrel tap.

Is the inside charred? If so, it must have been used for sprits. I don't think powder kegs use steel bands, they could cause a spark and kaboom.

A bung hole by any other name is just,well.......a bung hole! Didn't mean to offend anyone, just thought it was kinda' funny being called what it really is called. My bad, but dang, that was just too good to pass up. :-[ Monty

IT LOOKS LIKE A POWDER-KEG MADE FOR A SPECIAL REASON. IT"S A BOMB. USED TO BLOW BRIDGES/STOCKADE WALLS/ HURLED OVER WALLS AND BETWEEN WOODEN SAILING SHIPS.Easily carried by one man!

Got me wondering what this could be too. I did check the S.C.C....Southern Comfort Company. Old whiskey barrels would still have the smell to them. I have 2 halves with flowers planted in them, but never seen one this little.

Neat find, Reddie. I would had bought it myself. Hope someone can ID it.

My barrel was definitely used for powder and it has steel bands. I suppose in the old days people weren't as safety-conscious as we are today!
