It has been a bit slow lately as I am having a bit of trouble with my new AT Max (I posted this in another form here, any help would be appreciated), but I did manage to find a few items lately
One is quite a nice livery button that my research tells me date to between 1804 and 1825, I like the Unicorn:
I also found some lead items, a spoon handle and something that I am not quite sure what it is other than that it dates to the early 1800's due to the context of where it was found:
When I first found the shell casing I thought it was a shotgun shell but it is in fact a huge .577 Snider Enfield casing. These are interesting guns, they were modified by the British from their 1853 Muzzle loading Enfields. They were first manufactured in 1866 and phased out in 1874 although they were used in India until about the turn of the century. One of my sons has a summer job at the Halifax Citadel where he marches about in his kilt with this very same gun. They do drills with them and the public can pay to fire them (blanks only of course). They have about 60 original guns for their troops there dating to 1869
Finally I have a mystery item. I found this at the base of an old homestead driveway along an abandoned road. It is very thin and at first I thought that I had a hammered coin, but now I don't think so. I am mystified as to what it is. Sometimes I think I can see an O S on it. Other times I think I see the outstretched wings of an eagle, but it is most likely wishful thinking. If anybody has any thoughts I would love to hear.
