Went down to the ocean front to eventually link up with Max and Denny. They were on there way to one spot, I decided to hit another first. The last tide cycle had brought some more sand up onto the beach so tgts were in small clusters then just large "bald spots" as Max calls them. I managed to find one button in or near each of the 3 cuts I was working, and just a few other pieces of junk and small copper and brass pieces.
The first button is a one piece pewter. It's pretty trashed but I think I see a "6" on it (could be a 3 or 5 though). If it's a "6" then it could be similar to a British 6th Reg. of Foot button I found earlier this year.
The second button still has the shank on it but there are no marks I can see (or they have worn off) . Not sure if it's actually a complete button or just the back of one that came off.
The last button is in the best shape. After finding the first two, I had run into Ima who wasn't finding a whole lot either. When we passed each other again she told me she lost a really good signal in the wash and wasn't going to pursue it as she wasn't prepared to wade out into the drink. We wished each other luck and moved on. About 10 mins after we parted I hit a (or that) GREAT signal in the knee deep wash. I set the scoop in and when the water went out I could see the shank sticking up out of the sand. Cleaned it off and saw this:
Really great condition!. Front has a crown and "SA" on it. Reverse is marked "Firman & Sons London". From looking up some info I believe it was made in the late 1800's but don't know much more than that. Closest example I could find was one that looks similar byt had the letter "SAR" for South Australia Rail. Not sure if there is any connection. If anyone has any info on the buttons (#2 and #3, don't expect much on #1 since it's trashed) please weigh in! I'd like to know more about it.
Lastly I found some sort of a copper/bronze ring. Figured it was a piece off of some kind of gear or tack or something but when I got home I saw what looked like some marks on the inside. When I took a macro picture I see what look like the initials "RA" stamped into it, real small though. You can see the metal is deformed and bowed out a bit where the "stamp" is (if it is a stamp) making it look like it was stuck. Looks like it was hand made.
Any idea what this is?
Thanks for looking!
