ST. ALBANS ... nearly everybody has heard of the 18 Oct 1864 robbery of the banks by confederate troops who fled to CANADA. Others know that some raiders were captured and some money recovered. Of the 22 raiders 14 were caught. Counting the $70,000 returned to the bank $114,522 is missing. At least once a Confederate veteran was seen searching on the Vermont side of the border. He looked confused and left empty handed. WHAT FEW PEOPLE KNOW is that a MISSISSIPPI diary reveals that the raiders hid seven heavy sacks with $114, 500 TO $120,000 in a pine grove near some rocks. source PAGE 44, DESPERATE TIMES - DESPERATE MEASURES - REBEL RAID LOOT BY W.
