This was found last weekend in an area known for War of 1812 finds...when I dug it my first impression was military due to the shield on the mouth piece. I can positively date it to the late 1700s to the early 1800s by the makers mark but I am really curious if this could possibly be an officer's silver signal whistle. I've done my internet research and have found numerous written references to silver signal whistles but cannot find any pics.

Am I way off base here? Is the shield motif more than a military marking? Thanks for the input all.

I've seen these in pewter before, but I've never seen a silver one. My understanding is that most of these whistles of a similar design are militia-related. I would base that on the design more than the shield motif.

Let's see what the rest of the crew thinks...

Yeah, I'm surprised that nobody has any more information on your whistle, or the maker's mark on it... :icon_scratch:

Sorry, I should have mentioned...the makers mark is "IT" and is the mark of Joseph Taylor of Birmingham.
