We have property that we hunt that is a u shaped home in Suffolk,va that was built in 1701. This home was also a civil war hospital and actually had 2 cannon balls dug out of the back of it a few years ago. We have found several Waterbury military buttons, numerous musket balls and bullets. I have added a photo with a quarter as a size reference since this is a small unique button. This one item has baffled us. Any ideas???? Please let us know your thoughts as we are very new to this. Only our 3rd trip to this property and we have only had a handful of trips metal detecting period.

My first thought was that it's a decorative early 19thc button as well.
How thick is it and what's on the back?

The 3rd picture is actually the back, I know it’s hard to see and it’s very very thin. Adding a few extra pics now. We are still learning how to clean certain objects properly without destroying them so these aren’t as clean as they could be.

Late18th/early19th decorative button. I would say ladie's but men wore fancy buttons also.

Man that is a beautiful button.
I would say it's a silver washed decorative button from the 1700's -1800's.
I would be taking my time and scouring that site.
Great find...

Thank you so much. I have been looking everywhere and this one doesn’t have any names or etching to help me narrow it down any further that’s why I haven’t marked this solved. But it is beautiful and seemingly unique. I really want to pinpoint if it’s a military button or formal dress and maybe even if I’m lucky a little smaller date range for the time period it was made/worn.

Not military. Civilian buttons are harder to date. A lot of them are one of a kind with no makers marks. All you have to go on is style. In the time period we are suggesting it is probably from a lady's dress, jacket, or a man's waist coat? Keep digging, you never what's in the next hole!!
