Any background information on the picture? I love it!

I'm glad you asked, And now "The Rest of The Story" folks..This picture was taken for a news article in the late 50's by the press, I found it for sale on ebay and instead of buying it I just saved the image because it was priceless:

here is the backside of the photo (read caption):

2/8/58 - Daytona Beach Fla. A retired sea captain (who wishes to remain unidentified) walked into the George Lubke Corp Realty Counselors and paid
2,400 in silver dollars for a land investment. The sea captain has had the silver dollars since before 1932. Says that he doesn't believe in banks. Counting
the pile of silver dollars is Bert Manthorne, Left and George Lubke...

This unidentified guy is a stacking hero! That stash now would have been worth $34,879.52!

Wow...and that's just melt. I bet a lot of them were AU/MS which ups the value even more.

I posted a more drawn out answer in the precious metals section but I believe silver will continue to decline for the rest of obamas presidency, possibly down to $12-14. At the next election is when silver will either make another dip, maybe down to $10, or will shoot up to the $25-30 range.

-shrug-

Just about anything is better than fiat currency which has a 100% track record of failure.

Whether I bought it at $5 an oz, $18 an oz, $30 an oz or $48 an oz (or CRHed it for face) its a whole lot better than sitting on a stack of greenbacks paying negative interest in the banks when the (hyper) inflation train hits.

The fundamentals haven't changed a bit since silver was at $40 some an ounce. The debt crisis in the US, UK and EU is still going on, Japan is still trying its best to inflate its currency out of existence, energy costs aren't getting any cheaper and the west is becoming less free by the minute.

I'm still buying at every opportunity just like I have been for the past few years. Premiums are still high for physical (paying ~$22 an once for silver today, $30 for junk Morgans/Peace and still $24-26 for eagles)

Speaking of guns, :censored: it, semi-autos shoot up and PMs tank. Poop.

That is an Awesome picture!!!
There was a full 12-13 years that a Silver Dollar was and remained just a Dollar... Then very slowly -with ups and downs- reached todays value of $34,000.
Sad thing is- that land he bought in Daytona (just a guess, probably 10 or more acres at that price- could be worth Hundreds of thousands....or not...)
PEACE

You still have to be smart where you buy your silver even at the price of 15 dollars per ounce, its going to be about 16.50 per ounce plus shipping/tax..Then ofcourse there is that credit card fee..

Virtually all currency has had a track record of failure - Gold, Silver, Fiat. You name it, it has failed. Maybe not everybody at once, but certainly a lot of people over time. I read The Populist Moment, which I totally recommend, and it really gave me a good insight into how gold-backed currency really screwed poor farmers in 19th century America while making East Coast bankers immensely rich. All money has its advantages and disadvantages and while I may be in the minority here, I honestly think it is more beneficial to have fiat money than to have gold-backed currency.

I'll only celebrate when the premium for physical silver isn't as high.

Silver coins are 13x face coinflation, paid 18x face for halves at the LCS. Not a BAD deal, but still...

Its just fine at $18 for me I ordered a monster last nite for $11.190.00 And 2 buffs for $1.313.00 each I hope it goes lower. I will get one more monster.I think we are close to the end price wise??

Yeah Tim right now it looks like its leveling out in the upper 18's. Silver just wanted to be a teenager again, can you blame it?

Silver keeps playing with my emotions, I dont know when to buy......
