Silver handle??

I found this at an old homestead this past Spring. It says Sterling on the bottom and it broke into 2 peices when I dug it up. It looks to be a handle for something but the metal is very thin.

It looks to me like the handles from perhaps a butter knife.

More than likely a button hook. It probably had a steel shank with a hook ion the end.
Nice victorian item. Also Sterling silver. That should be written on it some where.

I think its a letter opener. I found this one on ebay that has a similiar design on the throat of the handle......

I agree with Gypsy. I think it's called "holloware". That's why it broke in two.

They all had the same basic style handle, flowers, etc. Uses were anywhere from button hooks,(the most common) to letter openers to a number of different pics-- like nail picks to scrapers. So what it held will be a mystery until the other piece is found.

I also found a handle like yours at the ww1 camp site I;ve been pounding.Like you I wondered what it was.Very ornate.HH...Panz
