I am posting this for my friend whom showed me around his old neighborhood in Owego, N.Y. We went to a park named Northside in Little italy (Endicott). It was about 3 inches deep on the gentle slope. The park has been used as a park since around 1880's. There is something stamped on inside, see my pic, we cannot read what it says. But it looks like silver! The hinged part folds up to clip area and snaps into place....NGE

That is a very nice treasure find, NGE.
Do you have any idea what it actually is?
Can you take a front-on pic of the Hallmark or some other angle.
From what I can see, it's a bear or lion or something standing in a bowl, or on a hemisphere :icon_scratch:

with another mark/letter below.
I have spent a little time looking for the Hallmark. The best I have come up with (so far) is that the bottom mark looks like the year mark for 1929 for Dutch silver.

Sorry I can't help with ID,but Endicott was the home of Endicott-Johnson shoes, many imigrants from all over the world settled in this area, thus the saying that is said to be taught on the ships to be asked upon departure at Ellis island"which way EJ"

Nope, we could not read it, even with a 10X loupe. But, it does definitely starts with the number 4, then what looks like a G&W, but not positve on the " &W".

Is it for a Jewish pray paper holder?(folded inside)??

There was nothing inside, but it does snap shut when closed. We, at first thought it had something to do with Fridgedaire Appliances, but their 'crown' has balls at the top of their crown points.....NGE

NGE, are you 100% sure about the number 4? I would think a silver marked with 4 would look like this 4 rather than the 'open' style. You can see in that close-up I did that the 'upright' stroke of the figure disappeared which would indicate it's not as deeply engraved/stamped as the rest of the figure, so may just be a scratch? I assumed (I know, I know) that it was probably a T which looks very much like the Dutch 1929 silver symbol. Just my thought.

Also, is that a repair under the crown, or do you think it's meant to look like that? I can see it coincides with the little shaped notch on the inside :icon_scratch:
It's a bit peculiar how it laps over the frame.

A real good macro close-up pic of the marks would help ;D

I have to go 30 miles , to get more pics. My friend is the one who got it. And he doesn't have a camera. I will try though. I have to go see my mother in a few days, he lives in her neighborhood, I will get the pics then..........NGE

It is not spring loaded, and when closed, it snaps shut allowing room only for one bill? May not close. NGE

I think Crusader is on the right track. Clip for a pocket prayer book or miniature Bible...

Thats the type of thing I meant. I hoped someone would pick up on it & pin it down. I'm lazy like that. I often just start off the process for others with my thoughts.

UPDATE! I just talked to my friend, he took a toothpick and toothbrush to the markings and he said it looks like HG&W. The mark is hand engraved by a lazy worker, the lower left part of the letter H is very weak, that made it look like an open top 4, there definitely looks like a G is next, then maybe a letter W with weak right upper arm. I will run these marks on a silver site.....Thanks for all the encouragement.....NGE
