This was an eyeball find while looking for a friends loat watch.

This was near a homeless encampment, and I suspect was part of a stolen jewelry hoard.

I don't know much about the civil war, or 4th Calvary regiments, or whatever my feeble google searches have shown.

My friend who's watch I DID find :) eyeballed this, and she is keeping it for herself! I am still curious as to what the heck it is! Thanks everyone!

Until someone pipes in - I searched Google and found...

PENNANT: H. F. Busch
SOLDIER: Henry Busch

PENNANT: Co. F - 4th NY
SOLDIER: Co. F and I - 4th Regiment, NY Cavalry

PENNANT: 1861
SOLDIER: 4th mustered in August 10 to November 15, 1861

Yea, I know - that is one heck of a long shot! But, what if the pennant is a token celebrating the soldier?

Is there still an attachment pin on the back? What type?

It has a pin on the back - I should have snapped a photo! The clasp that the pointed end would attach to was broken. My friend is holding onto it at the moment.

So, you folks have found a very likely person who this was made for.

Has anyone heard of this? It's sort of like a class ring, or keepsake that this gentleman received after his time served in the regiment?

Here is a personal ID pin from the CW made from a half dollar:

Maybe that's what you have. If so... $$$$

Personal items linked to the CW are very special finds. If it were mine, I would try and locate the family and see if they were interested in it. But I would secretly hope they weren't. Lol congrats on a great find

Ding Ding, we have a winner.

Great ID.

WOW - you folks are excellent.

So, we are thinking its a ID badge. Like the article said, it appears to be stamped from thin silver ( not a shaved coin, too thin) - and their photo of other ID badges matches exactly with what we have.

again, I am very impressed with everyone's sleuthing skills.

When I saw the engraving on this pin, it struck a chord. My great-great-grandfather served in Company K of the 4th Regiment of the NY Cavalry from 1862 - 1865. It turns out that around the time of the Battle of Gettysburg, they were stationed less than 20 miles from where I currently live.

Hi; I think VPNAVY did a great ID job on this one as well. DCMatt, Great Job. Well Played. NOW: God I don't want to say this BUT CoinFetcher, you said you suspect it was part of a STOLEN JEWELRY HOARD ?? If so then, God i never thought I would say this but, A CRIME has been committed thus you are obligated to turn it in to Police as Evidence. When, IF, you do you can place a 30 day Claim on it. At the end of 30 days if no one claims it it really, truly is yours to keep. Then as such being rightfully yours I, like etex, do think this find is BANNER Worthy given its History and Associated Provenance. I would love to see you track it down to it's Current Living Family. That would take the cake. As such with this all said I think you have not only found a piece of History but a great story to go with it. Congrats. Let us know how this turns out ok. REMEMBER: We need pictures of EVERYTHING so We can help you more. PEACE:RONB :leprechaun-hat:
