Today I found a beautiful old button. It is Silver, one inch in diameter exactly, has no writing on it, is glassy smooth on the front and has subtle radiate striations on the back. The shank in broken but there is a small domed silver disc used to collar and attach it. This disc has the radial striations also. When gently dropped on a table, this button sounds more like a coin than any I have ever found. Any and all info on this button is requested.
The detecting site is one of those "blue moon" opportunities. Sole permission has been granted to 20+ acres that contain 3-4 foundations with hand dug wells and history to the late 1700's. The fields have just been cut last week so I should be able to stay busy until the foundations themselves become more accessable this fall with the undergrowth dyeback.
I have new found respect for the relic detectorist side of our hobby. In 5 hours of detecting, I managed this button and 22 of the deepest square nails I have ever recovered. My new Tesoro Cibola (I upgraded because of the new site) and I are fast becoming good friends. I am more impressed with this machine each time out. hh blue

Looks like a tombac button (hint is the broken edge)... is old!

Iron patch is right. The button is made of tombac, not silver. And it is a late 1700s or early 1800s find. They ring up very low, and I'd say that one was a great save if found in a patch of nails.

Well done.
