Yesterday I took my son with me to a couple permissions secured the week before. Two houses dating 1922 and 1912 with lots of potential.
Because i had to be at work by 2:30, we decided to meet at the first permission at 9 AM. Right off the bat lots of clad and plenty of screw caps to keep us busy.
After about 15 minutes i hit a nice tone with high enough numbers to call it silver. Turned out to be a mercury dime at about 5 inches.
My son answered the dime call with a very nice hallmarked silver ring.
Come to find out, the ring was made in Mass by H. Wexel and co. They were in business from 1896 to 1904.
A few minutes later i hit back to back Indians and the smallest bicycle i have ever dug!
We left the permission and hit the second house by 11:30 and by 12 noon my son was spazzing and muttering the words Dad and gold!
I dropped my detector and sure enough, gold was in the plug.
A 14k Gold class ring from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
After cleaning it up he found a full name and what looks to be a social security number inscribed inside.
A little research on the internet gave my son all he needed to find the owner.
The ring will be returned this evening after almost 30 years of separation!
After the ring, I dug my second oldest Dog tag. I wonder if the dog is still around? For some reason i have the need to return a personal item to its rightful owner
Finally the icing on the cake came when my son (once again) went bananas.
This time it was a silver belt buckle. Marked sterling on the back!
Over all... another memorable hunt and a great way to end the year!
HH everyone!
