First seeing them in their long time resting place must have been quite a moment ( or week, or year,or..) for whoever recovered them.
(No, I won't be crawlin into any mine solo..or soon.)

The Jesuits and Spanish use to cast them in about 80 pound bars, one per mule. That was from my brother who saw one back in the 60's when he was at Fort Huachuca. The story went that 3 guys were doing clean up on the firing range and saw a stack of them sticking out of the side of a wash/ravine on the firing range. They took one and got it off Post and waited until they got out to then go back and try to recover them. Because they had the one bar as proof, they were allowed 2 weeks to try and find them. They had to be escorted during the time they were looking and my brother was one of the "escorts". The bars were stacked on top of each other and the stacks went over 3 feet into the side of the wash where the rest was still buried, as they told it. There are so many ravines and washes there the they could not find them again, during the 2 weeks they were allowed to search. Except from my brother's story, I have never heard of that from any other source. He did mention that they were rather upset that they couldn't find them again though. No compass headings to the peaks or other solid land marks.

Over the years a lot of silver and gold walked off from the Silver King. After lifting one of those bars I don't think I'd be hauling one around the mountains for long.

Just read the story today on Arizona Central about the two soldiers at fort Huachuca 1941, taking a stroll and the one guy falling in a hole, supposedly chamber with stacked gold bars, but maybe silver. The army did an extensive search but came up empty. Guys name was Jones.

it was a pretty well known story but you don't hear much about it anymore...two black serviceman were the key players...i think it is it penfields book if you want to read about it

That one doesn't mention that "The Duke" was there and convinced the Base Commander to let Jones go ahead and look for it. He was doing a movie there. Makes for a better story. LOL

Hadn't heard that one. The only treasure story I know about John Wayne being involved in was with Chuck Kenworthy and the Spanish Galleon off Catalina Island that the Glomar Explorer anchored over, and scooped off the bottom.

As for the Jones Story, they brought Kenworthy in, and he brought my friend Dr. Lambert Dolphin in. Lambert was head physicist at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) for about 35 years. He is also known as the Father of Modern Ground Penetrating Radar. They did GPR and Sonic Surveys of the land around where Jones said the chamber was. The surveys concluded that there was indeed a large void (almost the exact size and shape described by Jones) underground, but that void was filled with silt from an underground river.

What supposedly happened was that Jones' Chamber was emptied the same weekend as Victorio Peak, and everything taken to LBJ's Ranch in Texas.

Well the story my brother heard was that an entire company of Army Engineers landed at White Sands and then later left to Brazil. Can't ask my brother now though, died in 2005.
