Found this today and I'm stumped. It is flat and round possibly would fit back and make a complete circle. I haven's seen anything like it, its too oddly shaped to be jewelry or a buckle. The only thing I can come up with is that it was part of a Spanish hammered coin that was trimmed around the edge? Seems like a long shot but there does appear to be markings, possibly a number on part of it. Has anyone have any other ideas to ID it?

Thanks

At this point you probably won't be able to identify what it was. That being said, there is a decent possibility that it may trade silver the Native Americans had possession of. They would take any metals they could get ahold of and then made them into various ornaments. Great find.

Each and every hobbiest here should possess a precious metals test kit. They are cheap, and will take the doubt away concerning metals compositions....

Almost looks like it's been melted in a fire then flattened? :icon_scratch:
It probably started out life as a coin, but how it ended up the way it is now you'll likely never know for sure.

Good advice from DeepseekerADS... how do you know for sure it's silver?
I'd get it tested, that will at least answer one of your questions.

That is a good idea, I definitely need one. It came out of the ground just like this, haven't touched it and holding it next to the spanish cobbs I've found I'm pretty sure but I will test it.

Lost signal sent me info he found and it really makes me think this is from a coin. I also approximated the diameter if the loop were closed and its about 35mm which it could be from a 4 real. Still speculating but with that and a definite marking remaining that's probably as good an ID as I'm going to get. As soon as I test it and confirm its silver I just can't think of anything else it'd be.

Curious minds need to know.

Got my silver test kit but stone was black and I couldnt tell if it changed color so I ordered a white stone, go it and tested it today. It definitely turned a red/brownish red so it should be silver, maybe not fine silver though.
