Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

I decided to go out yesterday. I had planned a full day starting at 8:30 and detecting until it got dark outside. Well, I ended up stopping by the library for what I thought was a few minutes until I noticed a copy of an 1861 or 1881 atlas for 3 counties I hunt around. I decided to make 26 copies at .20 each. Actually, I had to make 52 copies because I didn't realize the copier was set to only 92 percent, and I figured that other 8 percent in size could really throw a guy off  I went and grabbed some lunch and didn't end up reaching my destination until about 11. I decided to go about a mile from where I had been hunting to try a new field. Well, I wasted a full hour and a half to find nothing...I mean zilch. But, at least I know not to hunt that field again. I figured it was a long shot, but I thought I would give it a shot. To make a long story short I moved to a field closer to the house. I detected this field for a good 3 hours and let me tell you...it was HOT. I drank a total of 5 liters of gatorade and about a lot of water. I took about 45 minutes to eat and went back to it. I didn't find a lot for the entire days work, but within the last hour of detecting I found a silver 3 cents coin. 1853. Notably not in the best condition, but a first for me and it made me happy.

I need an ID on nearly everything I found lol...

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

Years ago, I copied 5 different county maps and every township in each of those counties. I have used and used and used those maps. All the maps are from the 1800's. What a great source of information. But they are only good to those who don't mind doing a little research before going out and hunting. For those that want everything handed to them, these old maps wouldn't be of any help. You know the ones, where did you find that, or how come you don't take me to your hot spots. I tell them research, research, research is the answer. You local libraries and musems hold the key to better finds!!

HH,Ringfinder

Neat finds, especially 3-centers in nice shape. The shield-looking thing, wonder it it was a Civil War "bulletproof vest" sort of thing?? Any how, added the inset above from Ringfinder as i agree with what he said, too, about doing your own research and not giving "kling-ons" info on where you hunt. I usually keep my spots a secret until AFTER I hunt them, then wait o see if anyone goes back there and finds anything I didn't. Keep up the good work and the posts !!! MOJO

The photo after the button photo (I think it's the 8th one down) is a heel plate from a shoe. Civil War Era, give or take...

Three Cent :icon_cheers: :icon_cheers: :icon_cheers:

The tags could be from pelt trappers. Here in PA they must have a name tag with town/city attached to the trap.

great finds! how did you find a field that was not planted? everything here has crops in it

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

very nice job on the 3 cent silver piece! :) Looks to be in pretty good detail!

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

Great job. Love the 3center. That shield is for sure an old spade tip or shovel. Like someone else said, I'm interested in that one round copper. May have to tumble that one.

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

WOW ~ a three cent silver piece?! NICE!!!! I've never dug one of those! Did your XLT pick it up pretty good?! Last year I dug a 1868 half dime with my XLT ~ you would have thought it was a quarter how well it rang in!

CONGRAT'S!!

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

Thanks for all of the great replies. I am working on getting some better pics of the copper. As far as the 3 center...it rang very low actually. It was around 44 VDI, but it was also kind of deep. It was around 6.5" but I didn't have any discrimination either. And as far as the fields...they were recently cut for Hay so nothing was to be planted.

OK , I WILL TAKE A STAB AT THAT ANGEL, I THINK ITS A WIMPLE TREE/WIFFENPOOF TREE OR WHAT EVER THEY CALL THAT

PIECE THAT IS ON A HORSE DRAWN BUGGY, SAW ANGELS AND ECT USED TO TOP OFF THAT POLL

Re: Silver 3 cents & more-need ID

If that's a copper (i.e. no sign of a button shank on it)--you should also weigh it. That'll tell us the most about its ID if there are no details left. Also try peroxide on it if you haven't already--might be able to get some details that way...

And an old fashioned charcoal rubbing might be a good way as well.
