I stopped at 1 yard sale today and the lady had some jewelry out. I looked through it there was nothing, so I left it and started to walk away. The lady asked me if I knew anything about a gold ring. She showed it to me and she said she wasn't interested in selling it. I told her it was worth about $25 in gold and with the diamond maybe another $75 if that. So She says sold! Huh? She says, $100 it's yours!!! Oh no, I'm sorry, I can buy at break even! And she was mad that I didn't buy it from her. Im not spending $100 on a ring at a yard sale! Unless its a for sure homerun. It was maybe a size 4 with at max a 1/8 ct if not smaller. Antique looking but ill find better deals then that!

Seems like you made the right call, sounds about right to me.. If she's not grateful for your *free* appraisal then its her loss. :dontknow:

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

I tell people I do not buy stones only gold or silver because I do not know stones. works everytime. If I can't pop the stone (and return) I will guess the weight and subtract from the metal weight. I always do this in front of the seller. I always have a small amount of cut stones to use as a guide, they hardly weigh anything any way.

You did the right thing not buying, I never buy unless I test, weigh and calculate what I am willing to pay.

I take that back i once found a white metal ring in a basket of junk jewelry and asked how much. It was either 50¢ or $1.00 I didn't care, it was marked PT inside.

Thanks I'm going to use your advice from now on. Take the stone out by the gold or just leave it. Thanks.

Hold on there is no reason to pop out a half carat or bigger diamond & buy it without the stone! I'll pay the same price for a nice sized single diamond's weight in a ring as I will pay for the gold weight! A half carat diamond weighs like 2 tenths of a gram or something very close to that. That is almost stealing the diamond buying it at whatever gold price you pay. A bunch of tiny stones is another story but larger stones (well diamonds) I'll pay the same weight per weight as I'll pay for the gold. Dunno why you wouldn't wanna pay a few dollars more with the stone that is possibly worth 5x or 10x what the gold is worth. Just buy a diamond tester & get good at examining them to make a some what judgement call on the stones quality.

I also don't know enough about stones to pay for them directly in a jewelry transaction. Normally I just pay a percentage of the gold spot so long as they are relatively small stones. The exception to this is if the ring is in excellent condition and I feel I could flip it even if I paid gold spot for it. Then again, I mostly look out for rings that are are ready for resale with little to no maintenance required. This allows me to pay closer to/even slightly over gold spot if it is a great piece. Heck, $20 worth of gold in a ring hardly means you can only get $20 out of it. I'd be surprised if you couldn't hit at least $50 with a used piece in great condition.
