Went out door knocking today and got permission at an 1877 home. At first the owner, 92, said no because it's been done so many times and no one ever finds anything so she just knew I wouldn't either. But after she said no we continued to talk and during our discussion she had said she didn't care one bit if I went but no one finds anything. So, before I headed off to the next door, I asked, one more time and she said OK.

Lots of targets at this site. I had a feeling it would be good when the first target was a pocket watch. 15 or 20 minutes later a V nickel, then some wheats, Indian head penny, buffalo nickel, tiny jewelry lock, a Minié ball, key, and a copper, maybe brass ring.

I was so excited with all the finds, when the lady came back home I couldn't wait to show her. I told her that her yard was great, she said what did you find? I told her about the V nickel and IHP first, then she says well, I'll let you pick, give me the V or IHP and you can keep the rest. So, I offered her the nickel. Then she asks if I found anything else, and told her about the rest, but then she wanted the Minié ball and lock too. I think she would have taken the ring too, had she not already asked for everything else.

I gave in and gave her the V nickel, lock and Minié ball to her in exchange for coming back tomorrow. The yard is huge and i swung over just a bit.

The owner initially assured me there wouldn't be much luck detecting in her yard, which sometimes holds true. In this case, however, my detector went wild with thousands of signals! When I showed her the finds, she was surprised and I mentioned they were all from the front yard. She then remarked that most people focus on the back, offering a possible explanation.

I returned the next day, covering both the front and some of the back yard. While I encountered many signals, unfortunately, only a wheat cent made the keeper cut. My first theory was that the sheer number of signals made for "advanced detecting," meaning I needed to dig even deeper and everything, as I did, since the VDI readings weren't promising. So many signals also meant it was stannous on the detector for target separation and also for me to pinpoint. However, Pepper's theory – that the owner downplayed potential finds to avoid the hassle of granting permission – also holds merit.
Yeah would make sense to make it seem less interesting, perhaps the fact that you were still interested of detecting even tho it wasn't promising to find stuff most go for (such as silver and gold) maybe made her consider you care about history and not value.

And may I ask what detector you're using? My mum purchased a property where it used to be an orchard but there's a fair bit of stuff there such as ww1 bullet casings and old coins dating to 1816 as my oldest so far.

Only issue is that I have to maintain a high discrimination because it's literally littered with nails and such to the point of at the start id be digging a hole ans pull out 10 nails and bits of wire etc along with if there was a good target.

literally filled up about 4 normal 10L buckets with trash from our properties there (was 3 neighbouring properties turned into one)

I was using a Minelab xTerra pro at the time hence I'm asking, maybe using a better detector would help us in target separation? (I now mainly run a Deus 2)

The guy went totally ballistic, swearing, telling me to get the F off his property.
I've never had them go crazy after getting permission, though I have been asked to leave shortly after for various reason, on being they didn't realize I would have to dig. But I did have a guy go berserk just for asking. He wasn't even the one that answered the door, a lady answered, unpolitely told me no, to which I thanked her any way and started to leave. A guy then comes out asking ''what did you want?' I thought he was genuinely interested ,so I explain, and he reacted historically as if I asked to fk his mother..

This day I used a MineLab Manticore.

I feel your pain, every hole I dug at this site had 10 pieces of iron in it too. But you are lucky, after detecting in England, I feel that there is no bad spot. Keep detecting the orchard and I'm sure you find some awesome stuff.

Yeah I have to find the time to get there and register my Deus and Mi6 first tho. Unfortunately my country needs you to register every detector Inc the pinpointers with the county police before using them unless you want them confiscated and a large fine. They basically treat owning one like a forearm -_-

Did already have some amazing finds tho, most of the older stuff is from the orchard, by older I mean more than 70 years old.

Bits like the whistle and modern coins are from my side, basically almost everything else if from the orchard.

Ohh also a manticore.. nvm are you gonna get better than that? 🤣 Maybe use a smaller coil is only thing I can think of

Looks like you did very well to me. Makes you wonder about the others who "did not find anything."

The small lock is very interesting.

Congratulations on some great finds.

Thank you, I'm quite happy with the finds.

Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

I'll play devil's advocate here with the owner took nothing. Owner already owned the entire shebang. Owner allowed half.
That's one way of looking at it. But owner wouldn't found any of it without looking. The owner didn't pay for the equipment used to find it. The owner didn't dig 100's of signals for a handful of keepers. The owner didn't spend the time and energy to find the articles.

And who paid to buy the land and the annual property taxes?

It appears that when engaging in metal detecting on the Tartarus Dorsa mountains of Pluto, the issue of ownership might not be a common concern. Now, consider this: would it be reasonable for me to bury back all the items the owner wished to retain?

In expressing my gratitude to property owners for granting permission to metal detect, I've previously offered plants and flowers as tokens of appreciation. However, I contemplate that a more fitting gesture might be a lottery ticket. Just as in metal detecting, where discoveries are uncertain and one may come out empty-handed, a lottery ticket symbolizes the element of chance inherent in the activity.

This is an interesting idea about the lottery ticket. I recently obtained permission at a property but did not discuss 50/50 from the start because I felt they would have said no. I dug some great targets and they told me they were keeping everything. I accepted it and left. I was hoping they would offer something. I’m now hesitant to ask permission on properties as I don’t want to deal with it. In 2 cases the owners said to take whatever I wanted and remove trash. In 2 other cases they wanted everything. Any input in this subject is welcomed.

Wow, I've never had any ask for it all. Did they do that before you started or after you showed them the finds? I've gained permission at a multitude of locations and mostly everyone allows me to keep all finds. I wouldn't let your experience discourage you from gaining more permissions. Good luck!

After a few silver coins were found (not high value Roosevelt and Mercury dimes), they said thank you and kept everything. I was a bit surprised myself.

When visiting northern Italy I went detecting with a history teacher.
He had a little script that he would give the owner of the properties and told them if he found a hord he would split it 50/50. The people would always tell him you’ll only find more Roman stuff and he could have it all.
We found lots of pre WW2 coins and shell casings from German and Italian battle. My nephew was the shovel guy and he finds a 1388 coin from Venice on the surface of a plowed field.
