Sifting through the trash

I ordered a sifting pan for one of my sites at work. There's a late 1800s trash pit and there's the usual broken bottles , shoes, rusty pieces and odd items. I'm going to dig around and sift through the nails and stuff and see if anything good is in there hiding. Anyone had any good luck doing this? Good buttons or other personal items found that MD cant get due to all the iron and mixed signals?

I’ve made sifters from hardware cloth.
I use them when digging fields for artifacts or when creek walking for rocks. They work well. Yours is probably a finer sift than hardware cloth.

How big is that one?

I made these 2 up 14 yrs ago walking around my house building site.
1/4" & 1/8" ground mesh on a 2 x 2 ft frame.
It's amazing how many nails are in a small area.

I think it's about 16 to 18 ins around . Yeah I'm excited to use it at my church spot at work it's got a massive mound. I've found some good items there but I want to see what's deep and mixed in , there's got to be some surprises
