My son and I spent the day sifting at an old house site we have been working for years. These are the "crumbles" that ended up on the sifting screen today. Got a very cool and darned near perfect arrow head, a pocket watch plate, an 1845 Large cent, a spade-shaped brass whatzit, and various shards of glass and pottery. Not shown are the hundreds of square nails we also recovered.

Nice finds!

Thank you for your informative posting. Sifting is something that one rarely sees mentioned on this website, but maybe I am not looking in the right place. I am wondering about your technique, which I picture as one shoveling dirt into a wooden-framed screen, like archeologists are seen to use. I am wondering about the wire mesh--do you use the regular 1/4 inch hardware cloth?

Great looking point and well done on the LC also, sifting is one of the only options when it comes to the hundreds of nails from working a few sq. ft. area.

Greetings and thanks for the reply. You picture it correctly. I use diamond plaster lath as the screen which can be bought at places such as Lowes or Home Depot. Here is a photo of my son manning our sifter.

Great looking set up creskol for doing the job. I did these two out of left overs while building the house a few years back 2' x2' frames.

Nice. And very good set up you have. Good hunting.

Rob, you are gonna need to add on to your house if you keep adding to the house relics. Good sifting & HH, Q.

Rob - great saves! BTW, is there a reason you prefer the diamond shaped mesh to the more common, 1/4 inch screens one sees so often? Also, where's Doug??!!
