Sidewalk work produces button wit "A" and cannon on it......

I was driving to the movies late this afternoon and saw a great site. They were ripping up all the sidewalks around the town green. I jumped out ans swung the detector for about 15 min and got nothing. I was late for the movie and called my partner to tell him the good news. while i was at the movie he got a Large cent and 2 Ih in the walkway. I went back and got two 1916 wheaties. However the best find was a smaller button i got about 2 inches below the sidewalks. It looks to be an A on the button, however the center like looks to be made up of a cannon with three cannon balls coming out of it. However it could be a V with the same symbol that looks like a cannon. I was thinking an early Artillary button, but since it has no back part i haev no backmark to go by. Its about the size of a penny, and is a two piece button. Any info would be great..
Thanks for lookin
Keith

cool button ! i have no information on it, but it does appear to be military. the style reminds me of WWI era. :icon_scratch: we recently had some old sidewalks taken up in our area and i did the o'le "i'm gonna go by there in the next few days with my detector and see what i can find"; the next thing i knew, a few days had gone by and they had filled them in with new concrete :( thats what i get for procrastinating.

Looks more like a "V" to me. Cool find!

I agree, probably a V (maybe then a E :icon_scratch:).

Not military in my opinion, looks like a Civilian job related button. Like the Railway or hotel staff, something like that. Someone may full ID, I bet my guess won't be far off

well.. the "cannon and three balls" are morris code for .... "V".. so I think that has something to do with it... Signal Corp??? not sure on that one!!

..how about 5th Corp Signal Corp?? the "V" is Roman for 5... and the morris code has signal corp WWI era all over it?? Just a guess...

Someone mentioned WW2 afirst to me and although it makes sense the button looks older then WW2. However the V idea look smore accurate then the A. Im not sure though

Beethoven's 5th was a musical call to arms signal that was used on the BBC radio in WWII.
The ..._ is Morse Code for V and the first three notes of the musical work. V for Victory is also the Roman numeral for 5, Beethoven's 5th.

Re: Sidewalk work produces button wit "A" and cannon on it......

I'm about 99% sure that's a WW2 "V for Victory" homefront pinback button. Missing the pinback, of course. The capital V with the Morse code "dot dot dot dash" was a very popular design and there were literally hundreds of different ones. Many people wore these pre December 7 1941 to show solidarity with the British. Yours appears to be stamped brass, which is interesting as brass was a critical wartime commodity and was quite scarce. Therefore, I'd date that find to 1940 or 41 (since brass was rationed after that).

A very cool find!
