Should your coil go off when hitting tall grass or weeds?

I have been using a Bounty Hunter MD while waiting for my ACE 250 to arrive. One thing I have noticed is that when the coil hits a opiece of tall grass, a flower, weed, etc, the detector goes off. Is this normal? Should your coil not touch anything? If I place the coil directly on the ground, it never stops beeping. Again, normal or just because the BH is a cheap-o?

I dont think it should do that sbrowncpr, I use a QXT & it doesnt go off even when the coil is bumping trees, I drag the coil through the grass often, especialy when pin pointing with no false signals. Hopefuly you wont have that problem when you get the Ace250, but I dont think that your BH should do that.

Oops, lost the first half of this post. I said my detectors will give off a false chirp sometimes if I hit a stob or a rock or something too hard. To me it's saying, "Ouch!" "Careful big fellow!" No harm done so far. A
constant noise when touching the ground isn't normal however and could indicate a problem. Sounds like a ground balance problem where the detector isn't able to reset after squawking a tone. Just a guess. Monty

My first detector was a plastic mail order piece of junk that would beep if the wind picked up. Well, seemed that way. But it did the same thing. The slightest bump or even swinging too fast would result in false signals. It may be that some low end detectors are just not built very well. From what I've read on this forum you should be very pleased with the Ace 250. Good luck and have fun.

i aslo have a BH .... mine is a Pioneer 505 and works pretty well up to about 6" ...... 8" and over is hard to pinpoint it also beeps when you bump something and beep when coil is resting flat on the ground.... it isnt a very high end MD but it also isnt the cheapest. it gets pretty annoying but i will have to deal with it until i can afford a better machine.

Try wrapping your coil wire counterclockwise around the shaft and make sure you have velcro towards the bottom . A loose coil wire towards the coil will give false signals when bumped. Just a thought.

My Radio Shack unit will do it some times but not all the time. Seems like if it hits one plant stem it may do it but not if it is hitting a lot of grass. A lot of folks will knock my RS MD with which I have found $44.53 and 4 rings at the beach over the last 5 weeks. I bought a more expensive and sophisticated unit so I could hunt the wet sand and salt water. After three times out I had 1 ring and 50 cents in clad with the new unit but it broke and is now back to the factory for repairs while I continue to use my old RS MD. In my case I will live with the occasional beep on grass rather than no beep at all. Do the best you can with what you have until you can get something better. HH

Why counter clock wise?

i agree wrap your coil wire tight, also turn the power down a little it should stopthe annoying beeping,i stsrted with a bh 202. good luck

i have an older coil on my garrett 2500 and it will go off if i hit something like a stick or a rock. (not grass though). that is why garrett changed to the epoxy filled coil for the 2500 because it is more rugged and stable. someone already mentioned wrapping the coil wire tightly to the shaft, that could be it.
