Should I ditch my explorer for a MXT?

Nothing wrong with an upgrade, go for it! :o

HARDLY AN UPGRADE ID SAY. :dontknow:

Hey there, if you are going to swing a minelab (great machine by the way) and hang out on the Whites thread, you need to loosen up and have some fun! :tongue3: Oh yeah, almost forgot, A DEFINITE UP GRADE ID SAY

Crevias,

Has the MXT been an upgrade? yes and no. Depthwise, even digging the wispers, I haven't dug as deep with the explorer so in this respect it was not an upgrade. In regards to recovery speed, trash separation and sensitivity to small items, yes it has been an upgrade. Hunting the same locations that I did with the explorer, I am pulling out items I missed that were close to trash and I have started to find a lot of earrings missed by the explorer. So, overall for my type of hunting it has been an upgrade. If I had the money would I own both, yes. But next on my list is a waterproof detector and then eventually I wouldn't mind picking up an explorer xs or ii to have as a backup for when I do go looking for the older coins.

For your style of metal detecting, this may not seem like an upgrade, which is fine. For you the explorer is the way to go. As I mentioned before, I know the explorer is a good performer for many situations. I have since discovered, that there are certain situations where a less expensive metal detector does outshine the explorer. Since that niche of metal detecting is where my interests are, it makes logically sense for me to now stick with the MXT as my primary unit. This, of course, is my personal opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Many people say that they like the EXII better, than ExSE, which is what i use. I think the SE has a quicker processor to single out those goodies from trash. I had a EXII and did not like it as well as my SE. I also have had Whites DFX and i think that the EXSE is better than it also. This is just my opinion also. I swing slow anyway so the EXSE fits my style of hunting and i usually find those deepies that other guys miss. So that is my two cents worth.

Haven't seen anyone on this thread bash a Minelab? I think you are here just being a smart a__ for some personal reason.

Crevias summed it up best stating his machine suits his hunting style. I think a lot of hunters don't take that into consideration when comparing machines. Some people like to swing faster, cover more ground and hunt places where that style is best. Others like to creep n crawl, grid and cover less ground while picking off targets slowly.

I was ready to sell my XL-Pro because it is a fast swing detector, and I am used to my CZ's. Went over a friends house and we were testing a lot of different machines on a deeply buried quarter in his yard. Only a few machines actually HIT the quarter...an MXT very well but ID'd as iron, same with the CZ. Sov's with 10 inch coils, DFX with stock coil and Minelab Advantage with 7 inch coil could not hit it ( should have brought the 10 inch coil for the Advantage since I think it may have hit it with that coil). Baron Cointrax II hit the quarter occasionally and ID as iron but I could not up the sensitivity due to it becoming erratic.

When I whipped the XL-Pro over the quarter with the 8 inch coil, it hit the quarter hard and ID'd properly about 50-60% of the time. The needle floated over the dime/quarter range most of the time. There were also power lines about 25 feet away, which drove some of the detectors ( DFX, Baron, Sov) crazy if you turned the sensitivity up. Maybe that's why the analog CZ and XL-Pro did well.

Made me think for a second and I decided to keep if for when I want to cruise pretty fast and pick off coins.

I guess my point is, not only are there detectors suited for different ground conditions, they are also suited for different hunting styles.

I do think, however, that an MXT will hit the lower conductive and smaller targets better than an Explorer.

I agree it all depends on your hunting preferences.

If I could only own 1 detector it would be my DFX. My E-Trac goes deeper, and my Compadre is much lighter and simpler, but my DFX is the better all-around machine for my type of hunting.
