This post is a cross between this forum and the "Garage Sale" forum....

My questions are about BRASS:

Does brass sell higher than pure copper wire?

At garage sales, I see a lot of brass....much of it just plain ugly...like a coarse casting of a big parrot...but it is heavy. What should I pay "per pound" to buy Brass items if I choose to sell the items for scrap?

Thanks for your insight and experience,
Bill

Copper is worth more than brass.
Back when prices were at their peak, I was getting $3.85 per # for clean wire, and only $1.80 per # for brass.

I can't give you advice on what to pay per # now as I have been hoarding and haven't been to the yards since the price dropped...but I can say unless its really cheap I wouldn't waste my time doing that...if thats all your going to sales for...if you happen to see it, thats a different story.

Call up your local scrap yard, see what they are paying per lb...base what you offer to buy it for on that, but keep in mind a lot of bras items, like candelabras and whatnot have weights in them so a good part of the time its not 100% brass.

Good luck and happy scrappin'

# 1 copper 1.80
# 2 copper 1.70
yellow brass 1.15
remember when selling # 2 copper and brass do not clean it to much the are deducting for extra so if you have extra go ahead and leave it on for weight. (not to much though) only a total of 2% scrap weight is allowed

When you are buying brass make sure that it is not plated zinc. Some older stuff looks like brass and it is also non-magnetic. Good luck!

If you know it is brass, and you can get it dirt cheap, then why not. If you buy a pound of brass for 25 cents and you can sell it for scrap at 75 cents a pound, then I ask , why not? Profit is profit.
