Got out on a short hunt today and last week. The finds are from several short hunts from 2 different sites. I am not sure about the small shell/percussion cap. I think the large, short .69 cal bullet is a nessler that has had rifeling carved in to it. Any info on either of these items would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and HH.

Looks more like a Foster shotgun slug to me, probably a 12 gauge slug that's been fired thru a full choke (68-69 caliber) shotgun.

The base of a Nessler looks like this:

Thats a great call, Thanks , I had'nt even thought of a 12 gauge slug. I think thats what it is.

Hi Fatcat; Nice finds! The item you describe as a small shell/percussion cap is a 209 size primer from a shotgun shell. 209 primers are the standard size primer used in all gauges of modern shells, and were introduced in the 1920's. Prior to that, shotgun shells used a smaller primer similar to al large rifle primer. Yours has separated from the shell base, probably due to corrosion of the surrounding base. The ID on the slug is correct. It is a modern 12Ga. rifled slug by Brenneke. I envy your being able to hunt in December while we northern boys freeze our butts off! Keep swinging...

That would be a very good day for a LONG hunt FC. Nice historic Bama recoveries. Those .69 "Fat Boys" sure have a good tone don't they. HH, Quindy.

A very good hunt!
