Went to visit my parents this evening, and the wife needed to nap for a little bit so I took an hour hunting one of my "beat" sites, and this wax seal turned up.
The design is a lock and key with the phrase "La Clef Est A Vous" which appears to translate to "The key is to you". The only thing I can find online with that phrase is a mortgage document from 1788 that is sealed with the same seal. Pretty cool find for me! If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it.

Haha, yeah I seem to be finding quality this year, but not quantity - but I won't complain! Just shows that the plow is your friend, it can bring up the goodies.
I was looking for some wax to make an impression, but apparently I don't have a candle or anything haha. It looks a bit worn, like it was used a lot over the years.

Of course you would find one...your luck is like Romeos :laughing7: I mean gold coin, Spanish cobs
Why, not a wax seal...all jokes aside, fantastic find there, they definitely have the cool factor.
I had that on my wish list for many years now...I would like to see a wax impression of it...

That's what I was trying to do, but the glass is kinda frosted like it's been used a ton. Having a nice DSLR camera doesn't do much if you don't having the settings down either haha.

If you take the picture under a bright light on an angle you can get some pretty good detail.

Go to any store that sells Silly Putty, that is what I have used for years for impressions, resuseable and not messy, see my updated post below yours on IP's Best Finds (wax seals) for results.

Very nice find, I really like it! I have yet to find one of those seals.

I'll check that out!

Yes I'll take quality over quantity 7 days a week and 2 eyeball finds on Sunday.

What type of ID# did you get on your F5 ?
About how deep ?
Was the soil repacked good since the spring plow ?

You can probably get the proper type wax at a craft type store, scrapbooking etc. It seems these are coming back into fashion for wedding invitations and what not. As I memtioned a friend just got some yesterday, locally.

I'm sure the silly putty Don suggested is fine, but probably as hard if not harder to find these days, I remember that as a kid. (long time ago :laughing7:)

It rung up fairly high on the F5, it was pretty close to the surface after the plowing. Soil wasn't packed very hard but not not too soft either, it was just off the end of a foundation that's been walked over a ton of times so it must have been deep to miss the plowing the past couple hundred years.
I think I've seen those wax sticks around somewhere the wife drug me, maybe Michaels or another craft store.

I'm pretty good with the eyeball finds too. But I make sure to run the detector over them now :P

Nice find...that's a real beauty!! I've only found one in almost 10 years so can attest to how rare they are.
