I got out for a short hunt this morning to a site that we have hunted to death over the last 8 years or so. This particular site has given up two large cents, four half dimes, and a bunch of other early finds. I went to the spot that the coins tend to be found, and got a nice little surprise! I saw the edge of this little disc and immediately got out my camera to take a pic. It ended up being my second ever Shield Nickel! Same date as my other one too (1868). I am super excited about this one! Thanks for looking and HH!

Nothing wrong with digging that, Sweet!!
I scratched the shield nickel off my bucket list early last year, also a 1868.
Congrats!!

Nice find! I've still got this one on my bucket list. I can't help but compare this beautiful old shield to the new one we now have on the modern penny, which looks like crap!

Love that imprint of the coin, I usually look at that just as long as I look at the coins when I find them.
The shield nick still eludes me.

Thanks everyone! I found my first Shield Nickel when I first got into metal detecting probably close to 20 years ago! Actually, it was the very first nickel I ever found. Hopefully there will be many more this year ;)

Freaking Awesome! :occasion14:

Congratualtions on the shield nickel, not a common coin found! :occasion14:

Pretty darn good shape for a nickel almost 150 years old, nice!

That is one sweet nickel. Thanks for the pic. I was just looking at them on line.

Cool find and in great shape for a dug nickle!

Congrats on the nice shield nickel!!! It's detail is awesome!! Found my first back in September, but it's worn almost smooth. Hopefully your third will come quicker!

That's a nice one. I have one, and it is barely identifiable.

I like the dirt clod with the impression in it too. Congrats.

Well played sir!

That nickel was sleeping in some gentle soil.
It is in excellent shape.
Congratulations

Thank you! I should have taken a pic of it when it was still in the dirt, but I thought it was going to be a more modern nickel, lol. Still, I was very happy to at least get these pics before discarding the dirt. I love in situ shots, but I rarely think about it when I get excited about finding something good.
