Some good stuff in and around the Virgin Islands. Anegada Island has a few noted Shipwrecks, 1 that was a galleon I believe. This pic is what I found just exploring, infact this is what got me into metal detecting. Pic is from 1996
The majority was found within 25 yards of the beach. I was there several months after hurricane Marilyn, it hit St.Thomas pretty hard. I wonder what I would have found if I had a metal detector at the time.
Coinhuntrz - I see your pics as follows:
1 Lozenge style stopper,
Copper Coins
Lead Seals
Dates vary but the vessel is the Ajax Wreck 1800 period off Loblolly/Flash of beauty.
Has been picked in recent years by "Drunk Steve" from Big Bamboo along with fabled wreck San Ignacio he claims is out front, (more rubbish) there are a few Galleon on the reef out there most located North shore in front of the whole world, some picked clean others partially as best as one can without being arrested. Nowadays a full time Beach Marshall on four wheeler patrols the beaches every other hour! The wrecks are en route hency trade vessels with very little cash value historic none the less, no Atocha but several that had specie of small values on board. St.Thomas is great has all and more, Puerto Rico is prime many Thunters there or abouts but so many good sites. The BVI is strict I spent many years there and visited recently - still the drug plane flys daily and any funny boats or clouds get jumped on there and then, I like PR it has history and wrecks for miles, its easy to dive and a road less travelled by Authority, St.John is patrolled hourly by National Parks, St T has the DPNR but very little else and out side the harbour lies plenty of good vessels, Dutch would be preference Gold Ducats and nice artifacts, Good luck Capnduff, SaltyCracker
Sounds like you know stuff! I did score a few silvers, but only 1 that was in VG shape. It's at the very bottom below the coppers, it's a dutch coin. 1 Skilling Dansk 1762, when I first saw it I almost fell over! Those were some VERY exciting days for me!
I was'nt there for THunting, I was just on an extended vacation, then 1 day I decided to do some beach combing. That was the beginning of an exciting and lucritive "HOBBY".
Safe travels, the lozenge stopper was part of the cargo 50 yards from your score lay a lead sheeted vessel "Espirtu Santo" grounded in the hole, thats what the drunk fool digs on, as for Anegada I once saw Wally Creque with a coconut shell hand out struck gold coins to a couple kids in the Settlement, it was funny days Kilbride,Weller all messed around up there, I kept quiet and watched the good stuff is off St.thomas far easier and yes lucrative. Stay in touch, SaltyC
Ps to the right are several cannon, and stamped coins, spoons etc, not much just after a large swell, Creque had the most, off St.T I found several good sites never got back with so little time, one off current cut two bronze guns, embedded could do nothing , then closer to Christmas Cove, the rest lay in 28 feet a good one to mess around on, mostly copper coins though, back in the 9l0`s there was lots lying out, now no hurricanes and the sane covers most, the best sites are off Puerto rico and Anguilla, just look dont touch. Im in the ss cilly`s this month if you want more info pm me, its slow here, I am in Antigua next month, then relaxing bones are old now, sleep and rest a must, dont mind sharing. Still like your pic, brought back memories, SaltyC
thanks to all of you and especially saltycracker only because current cut is right out my backdoor from cabrita point, i'll check it out - there are supposed to be wrecks outside the harbor at frenchmans reef or packet rock, anybody know of anything
Here's A bettter pic. I sold the bottle, the ink well, and the Pipe for $1500.00.
The pipe was in such good condition :P, It was made by Walter W. Glasco Scottland 1782 . The Domino bellow the Copper coins, it was carved from bone!
I can tell you, There is nothing more exciting than that first find! THunting is my passion, nothing could take it's place!
its been a while with current cut, the guns were corroded bronze for certain, one muzzle worn away maybe blown off then detriorated, I remember well because ferries had just started and drove over us , it was all new then, 80`s... if you look off St.John Eagle claw rock, there is one ther for sure found rigging and folled a trail not much else it was hard times and little money back then till I hit the big one, by then I was too old too enjoy it, I guess a cold beer and good bank balance is a fair finale. Coinhuntrz I know your thoughts on that vessel yes older cargo for the captains family his own heirlooms, and yes it would have been fun to have met you back then, where are you now? I am going ti sleep early, Salty C
