I dug this today at the same park as the IHP above it. I can't figure out what this shield thing is. I first though it was a badge but no clippy-things on the back. Does anyone have any ideas? Or give me a clue so I can find out myself?

As Mirage83 indicated:
For many years here in the What-Is-It forum, those mysterious shield emblems with an Old-English letter drove crazy. Some folks said they were a "Confederate cavalry saddle-shield." Fortunately, a TreasureNet What-Is-It relic identification helper named Creskol came up with photographic proof of the shield-emblem's true identity. I'm not 100% sure he was the first person to post the correct ID, but he did post the proof. At this hour of the evening I'm too weary to do a search of the What-Is-It forum's archives to find the thread where the correct ID was posted for the first time. Here are the images posted by Creskol.
