I found this buckle on a 1756 home site. I've heard talk about shield buckles before, but this is my first, assuming that's what it is. Can anyone provide any info on these? When I first saw it, I thought it might have a military connection. The button and crusty Indian head were found on the same site.

Those type of shields are found in early sites. I've dug several over the years and some of the places that they came from were late 1700's to early 1800's sites. I think that they were used on a horse bridle as a decorative piece. Good find.

My thanks to deepsecrets and TN Digger. A decorative piece for a bridle or saddle strap makes perfect sense as there is no indication that there was ever a prong on the buckle; probably was just slid up or down on the strap. I can imagine this back in the day being new and shiny against the brown leather. Thanks again and I'm labeling this one as SOLVED.
