Did a couple hour hunt after work and didn't find much: square nails, a memorial, a couple shotgun shell bases, trash and a modern dime; however amongst those finds came a pewter button, albeit a little worse for wear. You can see the mold seam line and where the shank attached.
The sun had set and the light was fading but the hunt was not over, a mid to high tone jumping from 50s to high 60s called out to be dug. The coin in the hole turned out to be a shield nickel. I noted the rays on the coin but miss-identified it in the field as being a later version when, in fact, the rays and the date of 1866 put it as an early variety. This is by far the best shape of any shield nickel I've dug to-date.
