Pretty sure I found a goof up that was tossed. I can just see the Guy tossing it shaking his head with his buddy laughing at him. These shell adze bits were always made with the bevel on the concave part of the shell. It just works better to send the wood chip up the curve and away. Not this one. No damage at all on it ...wonder why? Ha.
The other is one made correct.

Gator, that is so far out of my League I don't even know what you are pointing out. That is not an insult in any way. What I want to know is why you think it has been picked up and tossed. I know you are really good with all artifacts, and brilliant with shell , but what tells you it's been recently picked up? That is almost like a 6th sense!!

It was picked up by me..ha ha. The grinding on the edge of the one in the second pic. Is on the wrong side when compared with every other exampl I've ever seen. I think the native messed up and tossed it about 800 years ago.My photos loaded out of order.

I gotcha. I thought you meant a collector recently picked it up and tossed it. I was on wow of your knowing that!! My bad.

Look at the work on that edge. I bet it is or was a very sharp tool:icon_thumright:

Yeah it came out good.? Unfortunately it would just dig a hole instead of pulling off slices.

So what did they use to put an edge on a shell to make a tool? I know here they used hammer stones and probably antlers.

That is ground not chipped..so it would most likely be a stone used as an abraider
