sharp iron... thing, possibly a sinker?

found on White Rock beach at low tide, sharp at both ends after soaking in WD40 overnight. nothing like anything I've ever seen. Magnetic and looks hand-forged

Interesting find, I'm thinking it may have had a wooden handle and was a tool used for repairing fishing nets or splicing rope.

I agree. Rope slicing tool/sail making tool .

this makes sense knowing where I found it, it's around an old pier that was historically used for fishing/crabbing. looking in google image search I came across this image: http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/893/sml_MG_5508marlinspikes.JPG looks like what you described and is called a "marlinspike"
