I got out looking for about an hour this evening, it was so windy today that I figured something must have gotten dusted off. I picked a little bi-facially flaked scraper/blade with nice spur and a nice, although broken, example of a shaft straightener.

Very nice finds!! Do you thing the Shaft Straightener was broken during use and that's why the second hole is in it? I have one that Steve(larson) sent me that is just like that one I kind of figured that's why it has two holes. One was broken out from use, so they put in another one.

I bet that in the process of working a shaft *giggity* the broke it and had to start on a new hole *giggity giggity*

Thanks, they may have done so on some but on this one I think both holes were made at the same time. It's difficult to see in the photos but the wear or shine around the holes from use looks the same. One would think that if one hole broke and another was made, that the broken area wouldn't show the same amount of shine.

these wrenches were made from buffalo ribs and were fairly long usually with two or three holes
most of them broke because of the extreme pressure that was applied to them during their use
the arrow shafts were moistened in some areas, then heat along with pressure using the wrench was applied to straighten the shaft
i have tried this with a few of them and ended up breaking some
this one here was broke and was continued to be used
a lot of them are broke from farm equipment or livestock traffic
this one is a nice example

That is thing of beauty T. Awesome find!!!!...........................GTP(Chris)

I have to say though I like Reapers interpretation of a shaft straightener better. She'd find one everyday if she was living with me "CAN YOU DIG IT!!!!!!.... :laughing7: :laughing7: ;D :icon_thumleft:

Finding a shaft straightener has been on my "bucket" list. I have found many many mano's hoping one side was used as a straightener.

Great finds.
