Severe problems with white's GMT

Hey everyone, hope someone can help me on this one,

When I moved to Taiwan I took my White's GMT along and last weekend we went to a mountain where gold has been found before and did some prospecting with some friends.

After about 10 minutes detecting without problems the display went crazy and the message "BAD GROUND REDUCE GAIN" did not disappear, and a terrible screeching sound was constant.

Even after turning the gain to the minimum it persisted and even lifting the coil up in the air didn't change it. After turning the detector off and on about 10 times it disappeared just to return back 2 minutes later and then the problem didn't even go away after I turned it on and off many times.

Is it because of the strange soil in Taiwan or does the detector have a serious problem?

Any help appreciated.

I would call Whites. Or use the Whites Forum. To me it sounds like a loose connection or bad coil.

Isn't this supposed to be the White's forum of Treasurenet?

It is. He's talking about the real White's forum. You have about 1000X the people that own White's detectors that can help out.

Steve Howard (showard) works at whites and is the best man to answer the question. If possible, do try to use another GMT coil to see if it is a coil problem. Also if detecting in streams, NEVER lift the coil higher than the control box, water will run down into the control box (Yes I did that ) :) So it wouldn't hurt to ask at that forum in the "Ask Whites" section
