I just got my new Garrett Ace 350 (newbie). My first day I just found some trash and started learning how the machine worked. I soon wimped out I didn't dress warm enough!

Today after reading (well some of them) instructions, I set out after work to practice some more. Somewhere I read Garrett recommends running in zero discrimination mode for the first 10 hours of practice to get used to the different sounds and indications.

My first find was the telephone cable coming to the house.... only 6 inches deep? hmmm and NO I didn't call before I dug.

Who would have thought.

webatch, your posts will show up at the end (so everything is chronological). If you want to refer to a specific statement, hit "reply with quote" and that'll do it.

I don't know why people are questioning you finding the cable only 6 inches deep. My Ace 350 has targeted tiny pieces of metal (small nails, tiny buttons, misc items) that are 12 inches deep. I'm highly impressed with how it finds stuff. I've told you about my qualms with it 8-)

A pin pointer will make your life SO MUCH BETTER! I seriously will not go detecting without it. The Garrett Pro Pointer is really good; I've heard mixed things about Minelabs new offering.

The videos are a fine way to learn about your detector. You don't need to read the manual. It's basically the same info, that is, if you're watching the official videos from Garrett. There are plenty of YouTube videos from others offering good advice, especially with pin pointing techniques.

One tip you may not find... if you use the Ace 350 to pin point and you don't get a loud solid buzz, it's most likely a big target. Another thing to consider is if you get a silver tone (yay!) but go to pin point, you're now in all metal mode, so you may actually pin point a close by iron crappy target, so you just have to keep at it and get used to the nuances of the machine.

Welcome to both!! U will learn sumthing every time u go out. I'm a lil north of seymour. Where u by? HH

Congrats on the machine and you'll learn it with more practice. :icon_thumright: I think you could have easily read that wire at 6", I've done it before several times with my Ace 250 in the past. Glad you didn't cut through it.

Keep digging!
HH
