Rough seas chipping away at Treasure Coast beaches
[email protected]
March 21, 2007

Brisk winds expected to cause seas up to 10 feet this week carry no good news for some beachside residents who have seen some substantial erosion throughout the past several weeks.

The rough seas also are putting a damper on the charter boat business and holding up a beach replenishment project in south Indian River County.

Today I worked the Sebastian inlet shoreline from the first parking lot south side) to the jetties. Three sinkers, a dime, and a quarter. Yeah, a lot of erosion, but most of what I see is fill anyway. The sand is easily three to five feet higher than right after the storms of '04. Got word that the new fill would be started tomorrow but it didn't look like they were quite ready yet.

I couldn't see where the fill would be coming from but it appears to be well inside the inlet.

Stay at the Sebastian Inlet State Park. You'll be the closest to the beaches there. There is a Campground in Sebastian but personally I think the owners are....well, lets just say, less then desireable to do bussiness with.

Yep, the Sebastian inlet state park is the place. They allow tent or RV camping. I think all sites have elec. and nice bathrooms. Plus it doesnt cost too much. Good fishing when your not detecting too.

can you dive in the icw?

This park is excellent camping IMO http://www.campingspacecoast.com/rv_tent/longpoint.htm
and is only 1.5 miles from the inlet, but it is located on the lagoon and is a long walk to the beach.

you can dive in the ICW but it is very shallow most places. Other then inside the Sebastian Inlet itself, the deepest area I know of is 14 feet (Sebastian area) and visibility is usually very poor (<3feet)

Isnt there rumor's about a galleon in the ICW around Sebastian? Anyone know anymore about this?

Any idea about beach cut and conditions around Rio Mar and Corrigan's? I'll be in the area over the weekend and am thinking about bringing the beach detector on the trip.

I have never heard about a galleon in the ICW near Sebastian, not saying its impossible but i have never heard of it. Prior to the dredging of the ICW I would think it was to shallow for a galleon but maybe not as I have heard that the barrier Island was once the offshore reef and the lagoon may have been much deeper then.

As the stroy goes, it was not sailing up the ICW but was blown over the barrier island during the storm. It may not ahve been a full galleon, but cobbs and artifacts ahd been recovered from in the ICW waters near the east end.

Wish i knew where that was, i would check it out. I know where the barrier island is thinnest now and it is very close the several of the 1715 wrecks although that may have changed dramatically over the last 290 years.

It has changed quite a bit, but you are on the right track. They've found pottery shards not too far south of the inlet on the west side of the barrier island. A postman found a wedge of silver on the shore of the river several years ago also. I'm not sure if an entire ship washed over, but it's commonly agreed that a lot of artifacts and treasure did. I think HRD was trying to get an exploration leases in the ICW a while back, maybe Tom can comment on this.

Wow, HRD was trying? I've been with them since 1991 and dont recall. ;D I'll ask Tom friday night when I get into town unless he posts here first.

Note that I said I THINK HRD was trying, meaning I'm not sure. Weren't you guys getting a benthic survey done somewhere to evaluate whether or not you could dig near the fragile tube worms or something....I thought that was ICW, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong. Could be a completely different company...but HRD sounded right when I typed it. LOL

its my understanding the dunes now were much further from the water years ago .. meaning the water line has moved up and taken beach not the other way around.. the dunes 200yrs ago were probably in 10 feet of water off the beach... time wind and storms have knocked the dunes back year after year..so someone who said the dunes now use to be a offshore reef has it backwards..

The benthic survey was required to get our permit from the DEP. This is for our offshore exploration lease in Vero Beach.

I have heard many stories of artifacts found in the Indian River, including cannons.
Bob Marx has had people report to him of finding gold coins while "clamming" in the river.
Steven Shouppe claimed that when pirate Henry Jennings raided the 1715 fleet salvage camp at the Palmar de Ais, his raiding party came up the Indian River in shallow draft boats, not from the ocean side.

The old Sebastian inlet was located about 3 miles south from the current one. Historian Doug Armstrong said it was in the vicinity of the current Ambersands beach access. If you check the maps, there is a prominent land mass that sticks out into the river (now occupied by a private mansion) and has a small protected harbor, which is called Old Spanish Harbor.
