If you noticed when they were separating/searching the tailings of dirt dug...they tossed a bunch of timbers to the side from out of the hole. This digger claw would splinter wood as it dug it out, so a lot of wood chunks would continue down into the hole as they dig. When they brought up a piece from the right depth, what's to say it isn't a chunk that had fallen from a higher level as they dug the hole? A clam shell digger doesnt leave a 'clean' cut as it digs, removes side debris as it goes deeper that collapses off the pipe walls, so there could be surface debris even at depth.
Getting excited over a chunk of wood after already removing a pickup truck load doesn't do much for me...
