I found it after Irene hit the De. coast. There are shipwrecks at this beach, Indian River Inlet.
It will fit in a 6 in. circle. The metal turned black in the salt water. It is not iron. it is gray in color. It is heavy and hard. When buffed on a steel wheel there were no sparks and little if any wear. It appears to have the remains of a bracket on the back.
Photo #1 is as found.
Photo #2 is the back after "sand blasting" with Al oxide.
Photo #3 is the front after sandblasting & buffing with an iron wheel.
