Hello All,

I *think* I know what this is, as the title suggests... but is there any way to figure out if it is genuine or not? Might anyone shed any light on this piece? The design appears to have been etched in, and then wiped with ink.

Regards,

Buckleboy

I'm going on gut feeling - not as old as date suggests.

For $30 you have a great conversation piece, however, it may pay to have the piece appraised. I'd sure as hell would like to have it on my shelf.

First it should be tested to see if its real ivory. There is a burn test thats sometimes done with elephant ivory...may be the same with whale or walrus ivory.

If it checks out that it is in fact ivory, then someone should authenicate the skrimshaw itself. Although its hard to tell when a line was scratched into the peice, the ink may tell the story by simple chemical tests.

I got this one plus 2 others at a country auction for $7.00 each ten years ago . The high bidder one the first one . Then the auctioner pulled a box of them out from under the table , '' Anyone else want some , hold your card up if you do "

They were all different . I gave the other 2 away as Xmas presants.

I hope yours is real !

Yep. Looks like she's a fake LOL. That's O.K. I paid ten bucks a good many years ago for it. Nice conversation piece anyhow. Looks like the one right above my reply could be a fake too--after reading the link PBK posted above with regards to pieces that are one-sided.

Thank you all for your replies,

after his return to the susan in 1829 he quit doing any more shrimshaw on the susan -- the 1830 date should be a tip off --- Ivan

Holy crap Buckles...

If thats real - you can buy a whole lotta new treasuremobiles at 100.00 bucks a piece... :)

LOL! Yep! Heck, even if it is a fake, I'm sure I could get 20 bucks for it as such, and be 1/5 of the way towards a stylish new diggin' vehicle. ;)

I go along with the article PBK referenced and Ivan's comment above: The clue is that Myrick sailed on the Susan during the years 1826-1829, not anytime during the dated year of this piece: 1830. Great conversational and historic value NTL.
Don.....
