School protected detectorists

I just ran into a unique situation. For me at least.
I went down to an older highschool here, thats shut down for some inside renovation. And luckily for me (at least i thought) there was some school officials present, checking on the renovation progress. So i went in and asked permission to detect the grounds. And was told that they have a couple people that already come and detect the grounds, and they wanted to protect it for them to hunt. Permission denied.
It didn't upset me, and i wish the two detectorists the best of luck. But i must admit, it did surprise the heck out of me.
Talk about a twist. HH

I wonder if those "other" detectorists were in fact the officials you spoke to?

That thought occured to me too. It's entirely possible. HH

Yep...probly what it is...... hmmm.... maybe you should go back in a couple of months and ask again.....

you know it's NEVER hunted-out! ;D

;)

How much of your hard earned tax money goes to support the school system? Go detect it if you feel strongly enough aobut it. Your asking was just a courtesy. They're favoritism was probablly illegal. JIM

School grounds are public grounds aren't they! You can play in their grass just as well as anyone else can. I definately would.

Amen!

Personally I think you should ask permission to hunt private property no matter what the situation is. But as far as public property is concerned asking for permission is asking for trouble. Returning to detect AFTER a school official has said no would be a tough thing for me to do. Especially this time of year when school is back in session.

My original plan was to just go there and start hunting, (and probably what i should have done). But when igot there, there was more cars and more activity than i had seen in awhile.
Just been seeing what looks like contractor vehicles.
And through part curosity to see what was going on, and part wanting to do the honorable thing, once i realized who they were. I shot myself in the foot.
I agree with you guys. If their allowed to hunt, then i should be able to, as well.
So i'll be making a return visit in the near future, to detect it. And you never know, i just might run into the two hunting it. And will love seeing their faces, if they should happen to be the ones i asked for permission.
The school is some what isolated because it's tucked in between some of the little rolling hills we have here. I'm hoping enough, to still have some older goodies.
Wish me luck HH

RVB Have not asked permission....................some schools around here are fenced.....When they leave gate open, I help myself . The others, I go when there are no kids around . So far no one has said anything , except a couple of times teachers have asked me to explain to a class how detector worked !!!! :)

Sometimes you run into odd situations. A certain MD state park is off limits from Memorial day to Labor day. On the day after Labor day at 9 A.M. it is OK to metal detect until next Memorial day. What a great day to hunt. The problem is when you go there at there time, someone has already been all over the beach and left all the holes. When it was reported, the rangers did nothing and did not care, it seems one or more of them and there buddies do this every year. I cry FOUL! But there is nothing to do. Alas another potentially good site shot to hell !

Where i use to live there was a park nearby with a swimming pond. It was a big concrete circular thing. Shaped much like a radar dish. Shallow at the outer edge to about 8 feet in the center. With a life guard tower in the center. With a foot or more of sand over the entire thing.
Every fall it was drained. I, along with others would half detect it and half screen it, as the water receded.
Also any park personnel that was'nt working that day. Would be down there with a shovel and a screen right beside you. It took several days to drain it. Was a great way to get to know the park Rangers. Many a rings and probably a few pounds of coins, would come out of there every year.
