I've been doing some research about my little town of Birmingham. My research identified a little town that was merged into Birmingham in the early 1900s. So this town existed around 1880-1900. I've located the remants of the old city hall. While it's a mess, the lot next two it has recently been cleared and is just screaming out to be hunted.

The problem is that this is in a scary part of town. There's a machine shop down at the end of the street and he said it's not to unsafe anymore, but....let's just say I would stick out like a sore thumb. As I was driving around in that part of town I noticed lots of abandoned lots.

Are these old vacant lots in what was the old part of the city worthwhile? If I could find a couple of other hunters I would probably feel ok, but not by myself.

If you don't feel comfortable going in certain places just don't go. This is a hobby that is supposed to be fun. You can't have too much fun if you are worried about getting into trouble.

You can always get the paper hazmat suit and helmet with shield that someone mentioned on here a couple of months ago...wear plastic ID badge that means nothing and if people come up to you tell them they better be careful because of the toxic soil........... ::)

The place I went to in the Atlanta area yesterday was a little questionable, not nearly as bad as the Birmingham spot, and it worked out fine. There was actually no one there 99% of the time. Two teenage girls did walk through and they were looking to get in trouble. I was down in some tall weeds digging when I saw them and I just watched. They were checking every door and window they pasted. Finally when they got to my car and peered in the windows I set off my car alarm with the remote and they bolted! It was rather amusing. On the other hand, that could've broken the window out with a rock before I could get to them.

I did notice on the steps of this old store I was hunting around a pile of nails, screws, and other rusty metal junk. A month ago I'd have thought nothing of it. Now I think, "Hey! Someone's been here already!" >:(

If it only looks scary to you do to it being a ethnic neighborhood then you may be way off base. If you know the name of the town research the newspaper for that town search the archives for crimes in that area and you may find that the area may be one of the safest places around town. But you may also find that it is the worst crime riden areas as well....but at least then you will know. If there are alot of kids around it doesnt mean that its a safe place sadly enough...as alot of drug dealers these days use the kids as lookouts. Do your research if you are not certain but dont let the race of the area be a deterrent.
