Hey guys,

Broke out my new best friend...the mighty CTX...for a short low tide hunt after work. Recent storms had eroded a section of coastline and revealed promising new signs of a long ago buried foundation. After digging multiple flat buttons and lead round balls I knew I was in the right place. While most of the signals I dug came in weak and broken, there is no mistaking the sound of silver on a minelab machine... I sound I haven't heard in quite some time. To my excitement, out pops a larger silver cob- three times the size of the one I dug last year.

To remove the corrosion and the reveal the details underneath, I used a combination of lemon juice and baking soda paste- gently rubbing the solution between my fingers. Any help in dating/ reading the coin is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE Using the information provided by Tnet, I may have found a match! Phillip V- 4 Reale 13 gram, Mexico City Mint- 1701-1728.

that's a beauty! I'd say it's either a 2 real or a 4 real. Not too familiar with cobs though. Congrats!

Dang, that's a beauty!, gotta be a great feeling unearthing that sucker. Congrats!!

Awsome cob Jon!!
That definitely is a 6, wish I was able to help you out with dating it.. Bill d should be able to shine some light on for ya..
For the size it does look like a 2 reale..Thats high ony list..
Get back out there!!

Really nice find! You are doing really well this year.

Now that's a nice chunk of Spanish silver, congrats!!

Great looking cob! And you are right - there is no mistaking the sound of silver under the coil of a Minelab! :)

Great chunk of early silver! Hopefully there are a few more lurking about there for you to find.

Steve

Killer find buddy! Hammered coins are a fantastic find here in the states that should be treasured. Yours is much nicer looking than my old cob. You are killing it this year

That's a big honkin' chunk of silver there. Cobs were made up to the first quarter of the 1700's so there is a good chance you see a "6".

Sidewise I would agree with Vino on being a 2 real, or perhaps a 4? How thick is it. I once saw and held an 8 real cob and it was thick!
....anyway....Congrats on the great find!

Hey Steve, it's about the thickness of a modern nickle.

Congrats on the Cob that has some size to it, something that I'd probably never see come up from the soils from around here.

Congrats on a very sweet find. That is a big old chunk of silver!
