SATURDAY: "da beach" at Jackson Park
The last time I spent 6-hours digging sand I was 13-years old. . . and didn't have
nearly as much fun as I did this past weekend. . . and with less sunburn
On the way to Washington Park with Kimsdad, we got a call from DP Bob informing
us that everyone was at the Jackson Park Beach digging up silver after silver. Well,
that's all we needed to hear. The great "South-Side Silver Rush" of '09 was on
WIthin minutes of hitting the beach, I was digging encrusted "greenie" after "greenie" and
soon after, my first silver of the day, a 1923 Merc. Almost all the targets I was digging were
less than 7 or 8-inches deep and the sand that we all were digging in, had come from a
50' wide x 150' long trench (about 3-feet deep). All the excavated trench sand had been neatly
spread out OVER the existing beach-front a week or so earlier so all the cool finds that everyone
was making, were at one time, located within that trench.
Midway through my hunt, I found two encrusted nickels which turned out to be a "no-date" Buffalo
and a "no-NOTHING" V-Nickel and later, a 1942 Merc; a Cracker Jack elephant prize, a football
player pin, a #5 hem-weight and a gold-plated "Bernadette Save Us" medallion.
It was wonderful to meet & hunt with a great bunch of forum members and make new friends
This was definitely one of the best outings I've been on
Thanks for looking!
