The front says : behold saint christopher then go your way in safety, and the back says old mission san juan capistrano, Calif 1776, sorry about the bad pics, the coin is about the size of a half dollar, there is a old truck on one side...any ideas THE COIN IS VERY WELL WORN

Very cool. While I don't know anything about this particular medal I would think you can probably get a close guess as to it's age by the age of the truck. Others will be along with more info I'm sure.

Must be a 1776 vintage Chebby truk...maybe post-pedal car...

The City of San Juan Capistrano which is about 20 miles south of here (Santa Ana) is a must-see-tourist-meca...every store sell some kind of trinket...even today. The entire modern City surrounds the original Spanish Mission...

My guess: A souvenir medal from the Mission gift store--or from another establishment nearby.
Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Back in the day, it was believed that anyone who sees an image of St Christopher would not die that day. As the ancient saying goes: ‘Behold St Christopher and go thy way in safety’. As a kind of daily insurance policy against death – this was so good that, in due course, St Christopher became the patron saint of all travelers.
