Same yard~Different day=Civil War & Rev. War + 2 Mystery pieces

Hey Ya'll, We went back to the same yard today, and found both Civil War & Revolutionary War pieces, and the best items are pictured below. I guess the pick of the litter would be the Rev. War Figure 8 Infantry Buckle & the CW Anchor/Navy Button. I have no clue on the Mystery Button & the Finial. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Breezie

Good stuff!

The buckle is OLD! Anchor button modern, flat button is late 1700s/early 1800s, lead hem weight probably late 1800s/early 1900s.

What does it say on the top rim of the piece embossed with H ..Looks like the last three letters are OCK .. Hancock maybe?

Iron Patch, what makes you think the Anchor Button is modern? There is no rim like the modern ones, plus it has the horizontal strips, and it has an iron back. I'm just curious as to what you base your opinion? Also, if you have a pic of a modern button like this, I'd like to see it. This is a small button, probably for a cuff. Thanks :) Breezie

Dang Creskol, you have great eyes. YES, I think it does say Hancock from what I can see with the loop. It's been soaking in Hydrogen Peroxide for about 2 hours, and hopefully after 2 more hrs., the name will be legible. What's the story about Hancock? Enquiring minds want to know. Breezie

Hancock was notorious for making a wide assortment of valves. Not sure that that is what it is, but that is what it reminds me of.

It reminds me of a Hot Water Heater TPR Valve but I guess not.
It sure looks like some type of sensor.

Very nice relics... I love that figure 8 buckle.

That finial on the unknown object would appear to made of lead or a lead alloy? I do know the non-food grades of pewter often contained lead, as well. Even in the old days they knew about ancient Rome.

That anchor button may not be CW, but it does have some age to it (wasn't made yesterday), from the looks of it?

Nice digs.

HH,
R.I.

Added: got thinking about that post on the finial item. Lead and lead alloys take 100+ years to get that kind and coloration of patina, usually, but what's curious is that the magnetic post is not rusted or corroded (unless you cleaned it??). This tells me it's some specialty alloy. I can't think of many 100+ year old magnetic alloys that wouldn't corrode all up, though. Perhaps a cobalt or nickel alloy? Interesting.

The metal mystery button looks like an electric knock out hole plug, but is probably a snap button. electrical hole plug.jpghole plug front & back.jpghole plug back.jpg

Could the finial piece be a pin to a decorative hinge?

I cant find your fouled anchor button exactly but I agree that iron back means blazer button with a Navy motiff. It looks old though.

Cheyenne, you win the Kewpie doll! I think you're right on with it being a door hinge pin/finial. I googled and saw several antique reproductons like the one pictured below. They are called 'Steeple' and 'Urn' Hinge Tips. Now we need to figure out the hallmark H in the circle. Thanks, Breezie

Re: Same yard~Different day=Civil War & Rev. War + 2 Mystery pieces

I dont think the bottom part is long enough for a hinge pin. Can you measure it? Does the "finial" have threads on the botton?

BTW Hancock has made valves since 1877. http://www.tycoflowcontrol-na.com/brands_results.asp?Selection=Hancock I may be wrong because Im only looking at a pic, but it sure looks like a temperature sensor.

ADDED OK I see its 1-5/8 inch total. Its kinda small for a temp sensor. :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

Too small for hinge pin.

If that finial was uncleaned I was going to say lead. Although there does look like a portion of the metal is broken away, showing gray metal underneath, yes? If it's a lead finial, I'd say unlikely to be a hinge pin.

Could we see more pics of the "finial"? A pic from the top and bottom will help. Also the lettering. Does the magnetic "post" go up inside the Hancock top part? Thanks. :icon_thumright:

Actually, it doesn't look that much differently than before I cleaned it. Basically soaking took off the dirt. Where the portion is broken off, it is gray metal underneath, which looked white before it was cleaned. I do think it is lead. There are no threads on the base, and the post goes up inside the top.

Could it be a finial to a small hand held flag pole? Thanks, Breezie

Great pics Breeze. They look like threads on the base but its unusual to have a logo on them, but are you sure they are not threads?

They look to be 'decorative' threads, not screw-type threads. The Circle H's are raised above the threads. which would cause it not to be able to screw into whatever properly. If it had a glass rod, I'd say it was an antique perfume dauber. I'm still leaning toward the Steeple/Urn hinge pins because there were hinges made for boxes, clock doors, etc. that were small. Don'tcha just love a good mystery . . .lol.

I've been buying/selling antiques since 1972, and haven't seen anything that looks quite like this. If it had a glass rod, I'd say it was an antique perfume dabber. I'm still leaning toward the Steeple/Urn hinge pins because there were hinges made for boxes, clock doors, etc. that were small. Don'tcha just love a good mystery . . .lol.
Since they are not real threads, my next guess was going to be the bottle stopper/perfume dabber. ;D Maybe a very short hinge. :-\ I wish we could verify the metal. Could it be bronze coated pot metal?
