Colorado14ers: The modern cameras are so accurate at setting themselves up I usually use the camera settings. There are exceptions. To blur the background, I use a wide open aperture. To catch lightning, I shoot using time or long exposures. Some camera auto settings bias other things. Landscape settings sometimes increase green. Closeup setting opens aperture to sharpen image and blurry background. On some cameras the action setting not only gives a fast shutter, it actually ups the effectiveness of blur and shake controlls.
I don't know if you are into editing programs yet, but I use Elements 6 right now. I would have used the sky in the first picture, used the magic extracter to select the building and trees and lightened them for a wild dynamic range image, or darkened them for a good silhouette image.
Photography can be a lot of fun and a way to make a few bucks also.
