Every NA reproduction, fake or "art" must be marked clearly as such. Modern knapper's products (unmarked) and sales have ruined a lot in this hobby. If one doesn't mark their work then they are a big part of the problem. SStinkyShell.jpghame on them.

I know a guy who makes great points, he sells them but never as authentic. He showed me the other day one of his points on eBay listed as authentic and wanting 3 times the price. He said if you mark it they will just Knap it off, they will age them to get patina. We were trying to come up with a tamper proof mark without ruining the point

Diamond tipped engraving tool. In a prominent spot that can't be flaked away without destroying the point in the attempt. Of course, people don't look closely or pay much critical attention when they like something.

With today's technologies why not laser the persons ID on or near the base of the point?

Haha yes I have. In fact I took a semester long class on knapping...I can make smaller rocks, I just don’t have the touch or tools or maybe I need hours and hours of practice. that’s just what my guy said I’m passing along his word. I figured if I had no morals and could multiply my profit I could manage to knock a well placed flake off

I take it you've never tried flintknapping (?)

It might mess up the flaking in a spot, but a couple of pressure flakes can get rid of the signature.

I don't have any ancient relics with me here in Hong Kong, but I have a frame of modern points in my office. Here is one that has been signed. If you weren't looking for it you could miss it, and if I have any oil on my skin the faint white line disappears. It wouldn't take much to hide it even without rechipping the point. (White out and a state appropriate for a KRF side notch would cover the mark.)

I have seen a couple of points where the artist drilled a hole into the point, but I think people would argue that that ruins the point and depending on the material it could probably be filled in or made to look like a fossil.

What Jim Hopper does is probably the best. Basically he knaps really unique styles of point, with exotic flaking made from exotic materials. For the most part his material doesn't match anything ancient.

It was rhetorical MAMucker. I have been knapping for about 15 years now and make an OK hunting point but good enough to kill deer with. Finding my first point and wanting to hunt with stone was the reason learned knapping.

I remember one year my wife found a beautiful point with finely serrated edges. Almost too nice to find many miles out on the desert in the middle of no where. I showed it to a very good flintknapper who insisted that is was a newer point. I know he is wrong and this finely made artifact fooled one of the best.
